# GuruHits GuruHits was an online music quiz (1997-2014): players heard a five-second clip and named the song or artist. It launched on 20 September 2001, built by a single developer on a now-vanished stack (Apple HyperCard, NetCloak, WebSTAR) and licensed for short song clips by SABAM. The original stack, song database, high-score tables, audio clips, screenshots, and licensing correspondence were recovered and are documented on this site. ## Key facts - Launched 20 September 2001; ran until 2014 (streaming off mid-2014, SABAM contract ended 31 December 2014). - Built on Apple HyperCard + NetCloak + WebSTAR. - ~600 songs, five-second clips. - SABAM-licensed for online music clips. ## Pages - https://guruhits.com/about.html — About Joe Savelberg — the developer behind GuruHits and founder of Euregio.Net AG. - https://guruhits.com/archive.html — The recovered source — the HyperCard stack, song database, high scores, audio clips, and correspondence. - https://guruhits.com/copyright.html — What is © Euregio.Net AG, what is released under MIT, and whose marks belong to whom. - https://guruhits.com/datenschutz.html — What this site does and does not collect, how historical material is handled, and your rights. - https://guruhits.com/impressum.html — Who operates this site, how to reach us, and who is responsible for its content. - https://guruhits.com/ — A HyperCard-powered, SABAM-licensed online music quiz from 1997–2014 — recovered and documented. - https://guruhits.com/netcloak.html — The NetCloak templating language GuruHits ran on — and a clean MIT PHP re-implementation you can download and reuse. - https://guruhits.com/sabam.html — The four-year correspondence that licensed short online song clips before any model for it existed. - https://guruhits.com/story.html — How a five-second-clip music quiz began in 1997 — and why it was worth digging back up. - https://guruhits.com/technology.html — HyperCard as a web application server — NetCloak, WebSTAR, four audio formats before HTML5, and a rack of Macs. - https://guruhits.com/the-game.html — How the quiz worked — the five-second clips, the ranks, the leaderboard, and the "boss" button. - https://guruhits.com/the-stack.html — Explore the real GuruHits HyperCard stack — the engine that answered every web request — and read its recovered scripts. - https://guruhits.com/timeline.html — A chronology of GuruHits, from the 1997 idea through launch, the operating years, and its 2024–2026 rediscovery.
